As it passed over, that emblem of evil,
the swastika emblazoned on the tail-fin,
became etched in my mind forever…
Mum came running up the road from the shops.
“Get inside at once!” she called, herding us in through the front door.
Gradually, an uneasy peace returned as the bombers droned back out to sea, one of their own having made the ultimate sacrifice in an attempt to save his crew. It was after this air raid that my parents decided to send my sister, brother and me to the comparative safety of a farm in Hampshire during the school holidays.
It was not so much for the safety of our lives as it was for the shielding of our Childhood…
